Section 4 Instruction

Before Class

This is the initial presentation of the material including examples of problems. It also enables you to check your understanding of the examples (look for Checkpoints).

Assignment

Before class read the assigned section (some have videos presenting the material) and answer the questions provided. Keep your work for the Checkpoints. If you get those right, great! You may be ready to start the homework. If not, bring your work and any questions. You may be asked to enter some responses online (a link will be provided with the lesson).

Due

The lesson including entering answers online must be completed before class.

Feedback

Your responses will be incorporated into the lesson by way of answering questions and incorporating your ideas and methods.

Grading

The lessons are graded as completed or not completed.

Class time

The class begins with presentations by the instructor and continues with you working the first practice problems (homework). The instructor will assist and provide further feedback during your work. At the end of each class the instructor will summarize the day's work and describe what is coming in the next lesson. You will be given a chance to provide feedback on each lesson through a Blackboard Journal (Exit Tickets). Your input will be used to determine activities for the next class period and to revise course materials.

Homework

These are for your to practice using the concepts and methods. You should know at the end of each homework assignment if you need to ask more questions.

Assignment

Complete the problems assigned on Blackboard. Homework will be provided through an online homework system. If you are unsure how to complete any part of a problem ask for help in the Learning Commons, during office hours, or by emailing the instructor.

Due

Homework is due at the beginning of class on the due date.

Feedback

The online homework system will provide immediate feedback on most problems about whether your response is correct. Note if your initial response is not fully correct, you can retry. You can retry each question three times and generate five versions of the question for a total of 15 tries. Note if you do not succeed on the first version, ask for help before trying the second version. You need to complete one version of each question without help to be fully ready. Homework is for learning: keep working until you are comfortable with the problems.

Grading

Your homework will be graded for accuracy of response. There is no grade penalty for retrying questions. Note if you think the online homework system did not grade correctly, contact the instructor immediately.

Exams

Exams provide you with opportunities to demonstrate your mastery of the standards.

Assignment

Before the exam select which standards you will demonstrate. Answer questions for those standards. You do not need to work all problems on every exam: you will already have credit for some of them.

Due

Exams will be given on the dates specified on Blackboard.

Feedback

Each standard you complete will be listed. For problems not completed fully correct, the first, major wrong step in a problem will be maked with a note about the correct step if possible. Full solutions to all problems will be provided in an answer key posted on Blackboard.

Grade

Your work will be graded for accuracy and presentation. Questions must be fully correct to earn a standard. See Standards Based Grading for details.

Projects

Projects require using the skills you are learning to solve large problems. This mimics actual use of mathematics in life and therefore meets the goals of the course.

Assignment

Complete the projects found on Blackboard. Ask questions while working on the projects to ensure you understand. Revise each project after you receive it back then resubmit it.

Feedback

Incorrect responses will be noted. Notes on how to improve will be provided. Additional explanation is provided in office hours.

Grading

Your work will be graded for accuracy and presentation. You are encouraged to resubmit projects. The total percentage available will be 100% for the first submission, 90% of points earned for the second submission, and 80% of points earned for the third submission.
